PHCF - Intake Structure Removal and Isolation of Harbour Wall Openings

PORT HOPE, Ontario, Canada (August 20, 2024) – The Cameco Corporation (Cameco) Port Hope conversion facility previously operated a once-through cooling water works with an intake located at the west wall of the Port Hope harbour approach channel near the mouth of the Ganaraska River.  The end-of-pipe screen structure housing removable screen panels remains in place within the harbour.  As the former harbour water intake operations are permanently inactive, Cameco plans on removing the end-of-pipe screen structure and abandoning the associated intake and backwash pipe harbour wall penetrations within the in-water works window closing September 14.

To facilitate the Cameco in-water works, the Municipality of Port Hope is completing a targeted dredge program in the immediate vicinity of the intake structure to below the intake pipe invert elevation.  The Cameco work scope will follow using a combination of a diver team and equipment positioned on, and operated from, a spud barge.

There will be no impact to the public.  The work will not interfere with navigation within the Port Hope harbour as navigation into the harbour is prevented due to the adjacent Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) wave attenuator installation.  No sections of the harbour wall will be removed, and no shoreline changes are planned between the harbour wall and the Cameco fence line.

A submission has been added to the on-line Common Project Search registry (http://cps.canada.ca) pursuant to the Canadian Navigable Waters Act. Reference is made to registry number 11393.
